Strength Training for Size
Far be it from me to correct anyone’s methods IN the gym. That’s just plain rude and disrespectful. However, doing so over the internet while preserving someone’s anonymity seems to be an okay thing to do. Maybe that’s an ethical grey area, but I’m okay walking there.
I was at the gym this evening, working next to a guy that was about my age, and really, really skinny. He was doing super, super-high repetitions and meticulously logging every set, rep and weight. Read the rest of this entry »
The Importance of Goal-Setting
Far too often people will say, “I need to lose some weight and tone up.” Then, they hit the gym. Things are going great for a couple of weeks. They’re doing a lot of cardio, and maybe some really lightweight lifting. But, things come up. Life happens. They get a little bored, but it’s mostly that they’re a little lost.
So, they look on the Internet for ways to spice up their routine. They might find some elaborate, completely unnecessary routine where people end up doing jumping jacks with 50 lbs dumbbells while balancing on a Bosu ball. They might even hurt themselves doing so, giving them an even better excuse to not hit the gym. Eventually, it all wears off and they stop going completely. Read the rest of this entry »

Improve Your Power (Part 2)
What good is power if you can’t use it? Endurance plays a huge factor in how much power you have over the course of an athletic event, or even a workout. Now that you know what it feels like to have an active core, we’re going to work on making that power last. There’s nothing worse than being at the end of a game and not being able change direction quickly enough or hold a defender off the ball. You might even experience core fatigue near the end of a round of golf.
What separates you is the ability to maintain your power levels over a long period of time. You want to be as strong at the end as you are at the beginning. Core endurance training is one of the things that can push your performance to the next level. The simple fact is not many people properly train their core, and so fatigue out quite quickly. This is when you have a sure advantage.
Increase Your Power (Part 1)
I see it all the time. It’s probably the most common problem in amateur (and even some professional) athletes. Maybe you’re a softball player, wondering why you’re just not getting that power behind your swing. You lift weights often. You have strong arms and a strong chest. You do plenty of ab exercises. I see it in golfers who just can’t drive the ball very far and soccer players who don’t get any power behind their shots.
Core activation is a key component of developing power.
Are You Beach Ready? (Part 3)
Wow, I can’t believe we’re already on the final day of this installment. So, for the final day today, I wanted to talk a bit about the different kinds of diets out there. Well, in a way. I have no problem with any of those diets. If you want to follow the South Beach Diet, you can lose weight on it. You can lose weight on the Atkins Diet. The simple truth is this: Read the rest of this entry »
Are You Summer Ready? (Part 2)
Yesterday, we talked a bit about diet. I’m going to hammer it again today. You simply cannot fight MORE food with MORE exercise. It’s a losing proposition. In the words of Alwyn Cosgrove:
You can’t out-train a bad diet.
Over the years, I’ve simply lost count of the number of people I see coming in to the gym just as much as I do. They work relatively hard — certainly hard enough to burn some calories and put on some muscle. Yet, their weight never changes. They pedal and pedal and pedal on those bikes and work up a pretty good sweat, but the pounds never fade away. It honestly makes me a little sad inside, because I know they desperately want to lose weight. They just haven’t been able to put that final piece of the puzzle in place.
I know the reason. Read the rest of this entry »

Are You Swimsuit Ready?
Well, we’re almost a month into Spring already. Summer is just around the corner. I don’t know about where you live, but it’s already warm enough to go swimming here. Are you ready to hit the pool, or are you already contemplating ways to hide your midsection with a clever one-piece? Are you going to be “that guy” at the pool still wearing his faded “1973 Intramural Softball Champs!” t-shirt while aimlessly sloshing around in the shallow end of the pool?
If so, never fear! June is still about 6 weeks away, and that gives you plenty of time to shave off a huge chunk of excess weight in time for summer. You can slim down fast, and I will show you how.
