I Ran Barefoot

Okay, not ACTUALLY barefoot, but it was pretty close. I feel like I’m jumping on a bandwagon by talking about this, but I just can’t help myself. Barefoot and minimalist running has been picking up a lot of steam lately, and it seems everyone is talking about it. So, why not me?

The Nike team was in town this past weekend, offering test runs of their new Nike Free Run+ shoes. Having run a half-marathon last weekend, I decided to give it a whirl. I used to be hardcore into running, doing close to 60 miles per week. But, there was always a problem.

I wish I had nice sand like this to run on

Supplement Week Will Continue

I was planning on continuing on tonight, but I’m just exhausted! Lifted this afternoon, then went and played 2 straight league soccer games. 7 hours of activity in a row, and I’m just too beat to deliver a quality article. Postponing until tomorrow!

Asinine Arginine

Pre-workout supplements are everywhere. They all promise to enhance your workout, giving you energy, focus, and massive, muscle-building pumps. They have fantastic marketing. It’s so effective that just about every lifter I know has used some form of them at one point or another. But do they actually work?

Creatine Considerations

Creatine is proven. It’s in just about every muscle-building supplement there is. Some of the more dubious-sounding supplements include it. That way, they can say that their product is proven to build muscle and increase energy. That may be true, but it’s likely not a result of the other substances in the supplement, but simply because of the inclusion of creatine. There are a few different kinds of creatine, and many people have different methods of taking it, like loading and cycling. We’ll examine this today. Read the rest of this entry »

Glutamine Gluttony

Pardon the alliteration, but I couldn’t think of a title involving glutamine that had a good ring to it. Anyway, continuing supplement week, we’re going to be taking a look at another popular supplement: Glutamine.

See? Glutamine supplementation can be cheap!

So, what exactly IS glutamine? Well, it’s an amino acid (you know, those things that make up proteins). In fact, it’s the most abundant amino acid in the body. It is potentially the most important amino acid for fitness because of its role in protein synthesis, which makes muscles rebuild and grow. It has a variety of other important functions, too, but that is for another discussion. Read the rest of this entry »

Multi-vitamin Mania

They’re everywhere. No, not Affliction t-shirts (although the irony of that brand name shouldn’t be lost on anyone). I’m talking about supplements. Whether you want fat loss, muscle building, energy boosting, immune system enhancing, toxin-cleansing or just plain old healthy living, companies have something to sell you. And they’re not cheap. But are they worth it? Read the rest of this entry »

Failure Breeds Success

I didn’t have a great day in the gym the last time I posted. My lifts weren’t what they usually are, and I was a little out of focus. But resetting my expectations and staying in there helped. I was ready to go and focused today, and ended up setting some personal bests on three different lifts.

Sometimes, failure can help us succeed.
