#8 People Who “Eat As Much As They Want”

This one is going to be short and sweet. We’ve all heard this person, or at least heard OF them. They say that they can “eat whatever they want” and not get fat. So, you hear this and are immediately discouraged. What’s wrong with you? How can you fix it?

The simple answer is this: You’re not broken. And they’re not special, either. Their idea of “eat whatever they want” may not be the same as yours. If they’re eating whatever they want and not gaining an ounce of fat, they just don’t want to eat enough to gain weight.

It always comes down to calories in vs. calories out. They’re not hiding some super-secret metabolic trick. They’re just burning as many or more calories than they consume. So, they may just want different, lower calorie foods. Maybe they want smaller portions. Maybe they just don’t eat like a pig every single day. They might consume far more when you see them as opposed to when you don’t.

So, when you hear this, relax. Realize that a lot goes into that statement. Perceptions of “want” differ between everyone. Keep in mind that everyone has a different activity level. But they are always going to pay the energy toll eventually.

  • Exactly I thought because I was working out I could eat as much healthy food as I wanted … after while I realised I wasn’t losing body fat and it came down to my “healthy” snacking …so spot on …bottom line is calories in< calories out

  • Drew:

Raymond – Snacking is a killer for me, especially strawberries. I might start out thinking I’ll eat just one cup, and then later realize I’ve had about 5-6.

  • Drew, love this series man! I have clients that are like, “…but Yavor! I know this girl at work that eats ALLL SHE WANTS and stays skinny…!”

And I’m like, “yeah but I bet she moves a lot. Plus there’s a difference between the calories needed to maintain weight and to lose weight…”

    Anyway :)

  • Drew:

Yavor – Thanks. I think the best example I heard recently was an acquaintance that said she could eat all she wanted and stay really skinny. Then, she went to a personal trainer to get ready for her wedding and realized she actually needed to drop about 10 lbs to get to her ideal weight. Needless to say, she can no longer “eat whatever she wants.”

  • Drew,
I think this ties into people blaming their metabolism for weight problems. People always think I have a “fast metabolism” because I eat a lot around others. What they don’t realize is that I practice Eat Stop Eat and allow for some cheat days. Generally those cheat days are when I’m out with other people and I allow myself to eat whatever.
    Dave

  • Drew,

My routine is similar to Dave’s. I really pig out when I’m out with my family or friends and eating socially, but only a small percentage of my meals are like this. The majority of my meals are Primal, low calorie, and I also throw in Eat Stop Eat once per week.

  • Drew:

Alykhan – I’m the same way, really. I really like primal meals, simply because I love meat so much.
