About Me

What is FitExcellence?

I created FitExcellence as a way to make exercise and healthy living fun! I wanted to find a way to combine the things I love — Fitness, Nutrition Information, Sports and Music — into a single resource that is easily accessible by anyone. The goal of this site is to increase the enjoyment of working out in order to make it more effective. As children, we all knew how to play. When we grew up, we somehow lost this ability! Far too many people make diet and exercise into something they hate, and simply panic at the mention of the word “diet” or dread going to the gym. The goal of FitExcellence is to change your perceptions of these things so that you look forward to keeping your body in peak condition!

“Big words often hide small ideas.” – Random Chinese Fortune Cookie

My objective is to never confuse you with big words. None of this should be confusing, so please post in the comments section if you need clarification or if I did not explain a concept well enough. Fitness shouldn’t be a job, nor should it feel like reading a bunch of boring old homework. When I post information, I will try to be as crystal clear as I possibly can.

My Background

Growing up, I was always active. Whether that meant playing soccer, tee-ball or just exploring the world on my bike, I was constantly outside. In high school, I was an active athlete, playing everything from basketball to baseball to soccer, and even running track. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, and could run like the wind.

Pear Shape Doesn't Look Good on Me

When I got to college, things changed a bit. I decided not to participate in sports. To this day, that is one of the biggest regrets of my life. I had no good reason for doing so. I just . . . stopped. I stayed indoors more, never getting outside to run around or have fun. This went on for quite some time. My previously primed body melted like a wax candle. I eventually had to stop and take a look at what I was doing to myself. How could I have allowed this to happen? Where was that athlete? What happened to the kid that just loved to play?

Trying to Resolve my "Skinny Fat" Issues

I was “skinny fat.” I had very little muscle mass, and what little ab definition I had was covered up by a layer of fat. While I wasn’t obese or excessively fat, my physique still had major problems. I know that a lot of people recognize a bit of themselves in this description. We used to be lean, mean, athletic machines. Through years of neglect, we grew weak and slow. Helping a friend move might put us out of commission for a week. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Good News

The body that you used to have can not only be reclaimed, but it can be better than you remember. You can be faster, stronger, and leaner than ever. And best of all, it’s sustainable. Many fitness websites show pictures of substance-enhanced models or models with body fat levels that are simply too low for any human to hold for very long. Not so here. You can lose the fat, gain lean muscle, and look great all year long.

Lean and Strong All Year Long

You will be strong. You will be fast. You will be the fitness envy of your peers. And best of all, you’ll make it look easy.

Zero to Quasi-Hero

I am faster now than I was in high school. Back then, I could run two miles in under twelve minutes. Now, I’m almost thirty, but can run it in less than eleven. I’m quicker and smarter than I used to be. Soccer is my passion. I have played since I was six years old. Now, I am a much better player than I used to be.  I am strong enough to go toe-to-toe with the most physical guys in my league. I am as fast as the fastest guy on the field, and sometimes, I’m the fastest. When other guys have to sub out because they are tired, I am just getting warmed up. The end of the game is really where I shine. While everyone else is slowing down and getting lazy, I’m fit and strong enough to be the difference. You, too, can reap the benefits of this kind of fitness level. When you are fit and strong, you can really enjoy working out or playing sports because being out of shape won’t be in your way.

This Blog

This site has a comprehensive approach to fitness. I review the ever-changing and sometimes confusing scientific research to help you make your workouts as effective as they can possibly be. If you don’t know where to start, or are bored with your current routine, don’t wory! I provide workouts that will challenge you and help you constantly progress. I constantly review supplements to help you decide if they are worth spending your hard-earned money or if they are simply a waste. And if you are looking for tips on how to better your sports performance, I can help there, too. I provide the methods you need to lose the unwanted fat, build lean muscle and claim the body you deserve.

  • James:

    Drew,

My name is James (age 27), and I discovered your blog through clubsi.com. I have been a somewhat inactive member of the site for years(CSIOT),but have always had an interest in the fitness portion of the forum. Out of all the members contributing to the information being passed around, you always seemed to be the most informed while keeping it simple.

My level of fitness has always been a roller coaster. I started lifting weights in 2002 (without cardio), and maintained a consistent weight of 205. (I’m 5’8″btw). I wasn’t “fat”, and was somewhat strong, but never felt satisfied with the way i looked.
In 2004, I joined the Marines, and while enlisted, I lost 30 pounds (174 to be exact). This was attained through tons of cardio, with very little weight lifting. I was lean, but still unsatisfied with how i looked.
I was medically discharged shortly after, and just completely let myself go. With little physical activity and no regard for what I was eating, I ballooned up to 240lbs over the next 5 years.
In December of 2009, I decided that I was going to take back control of my weight, health, and ultimately my life. I re-joined the gym, started being more aware of my food intake, and even implemented cardio into my daily exercise regiment.
Today I sit at 207lbs as I type this, and am very proud of my accomplishment. I still have such a long way to go though! My end goal is to hit 175 by December, and though I know its going to be difficult to get past this last 32lbs, I’ll give it my all trying.
I’m so glad to have discovered your fitness blog, because you take the bullshit out of getting in shape. I’m never going to be one of those fitness freaks who eats a perfect diet all of the time, and takes a bunch of supplements, so those types of tips don’t really help me. Your advice is to the point, and seems to be for “real people”.

    Thanks.
